I have a Coote belt grinder with a low angle attachment so I can get the “correct†angle on the secondary bevel (e.g. 25 degrees for a hunting knife). As the last step when finishing a knife, I use a Lansky sharpening system with an angle guide to sharpen the blade to the correct angle.

Belt grinders are pretty expensive and I would not personally recommend you buy that JET due to the price. Plus the disc sanding attachment i find rather useless. If you are willing to invest in a belt grinder I suggest getting a Coote belt grinder, but you will have to buy and install a motor.

I made a grinding bench with a water oak top and bolted the coote and motor to it. I use a big door hing and a piece of 1" thick oak to mount the motor to, the hing lets me keep contastant tension on the belt and makes it easy to up or lower speed on the step pullies. The Coote is probably the best bang for the buck out there.

I know that these are not cheap but I believe Coote Belt Grinder Company has the best prices on them. Be sure to get one that is serrated. The size you chose will be determined on the grinding you want to do. For hollow grinds it is best to have at least a 8 inch wheel.For flat grinding you can use a six inch wheel.

The Coote grinders are 2x72" machines, one with a 10" contact wheel, and the other with an 8" wheel. Both are primarily platen grinding machines but can easily be used to hollow grind as the entire assembly can be rotated to a horizontal position with the contact wheel out front. The Coote belt grinder gets my vote as the most machine for the money. It comes without a motor. With some luck, a suitable motor can be found for a fraction of the cost of a machine with a motor installed. The Coote 2-inch-by-72-inch grinder with a 10-inch contact wheel is around $400.
