A 6" or 8" mirror should take about 40 to 80 hours of effort. While this is a non-trivial amount of time, the mirror can be completed in a few months, and certainly within a year. Most people work one to three hours a day on their mirror about one or two times a week. Homemade Mirrors are of Inferior Optical Quality.
My Mirror Grinding Machine. For a long time I've wanted to build a machine for grinding telpe mirrors. Dennis Rech's M-o-M designs finally inspired me to just get up and do it. Over the years, I'd been collecting motors, gear boxes, pulleys, etc. …
Figure 2: Lens-grinding machine of Christiaan Huygens (From his 'Opuscula Posthuma', published posthumously by Janssonio Waesbergios, Amsterdam, 1728 ) What made it very difficult to produce usable lenses, as the Huygens brothers soon found, was that the whole art of lens grinding was surrounded by secrecy.
The I.A.U. named asteroid 17823 Bartels discovered 1998 by J.M.Roe in recognition for my contributions to amateur astronomy. Making is the Key to Knowing. A telpe mirror is arguably the most accurate surface made by human or machine. Amazingly you can grind a mirror by hand and make a telpe with simple hand tools.
The Tools: Grinding & Polishing. You will need two tools: A hard tool for rough and fine grinding, and a soft tool, or pitch lap, for polishing and figuring. Traditionally, the pitch lap was made on top of the grinding tool. We recommend using plaster disks for tool substrates, and that you use separate disks for these two tools.
A look at a 15" Telpe Mirror, with Ronchi history. The fabrication of this 15" F4.5 primary telpe mirror began with a planoplano blank. I used my own diamond grinding equipment to generate the rough curve here. After the generation, I poured a steel grinding tool and used #40 silicon carbide abrasive to get the mirror close to the ...

Document sans nom. A history of polishing machines. As often in sciences and technology, Leonardo da Vinci was a pioneer, creating machines for the production of optical devices. Indeed, between 1513 and 1517, he imagined machines to grind and polish telpe mirrors, which, at the time, were made of bronze.

Amateur Telpe Making Main Page. "For it is true that astronomy, from a popular standpoint, is handicapped by the inability of the average workman to own an expensive astronomical telpe. It is also true that if an amateur starts out to build a telpe just for fun he will find, before his labors are over, that he has become seriously ...
Rough grinding is complete for the 12.5 inch honeycomb-back telpe mirror blank. The rough grinding went pretty quickly and painlessly this time. I only have maybe 12 hours of actual work in the mirror so far. It's hard to believe, but the rough grinding has removed over a pound of glass. The mirror now weighs in at only only 8 pounds 15 ounces.

I eventually decided I needed to build a dedicated edge grinding machine. This is how I did it. I started the build by making a sturdy frame for the unit out of 2x4 lumber and 3/4 inch thick plywood. Wheels were added to the bottom of the unit so it can be wheeled outside. The grinding operation will be messy, so it will need to be done outside.

To do these operations I built a grinding machine which would be used throughout the project. My grinding machine, shown in these pictures, was based on Dilworth's grinding machine seen in the Nov-Dec 1977 issue of S&T: The grinding machine has three spindles. The right spindle is the one on which the mirror is mounted.
Grinding Machine for Large Telpe Mirrors. I designed and built a grinding machine for mirrors up to 42 inches [1.1m] in diameter. By slipping on and off a couple of belts, the machine can quickly be reconfigured for spinning work or for stroking work. The machine can also work smaller mirrors if the drip pan is moved to the fast shaft on ...
The well used tile tool at right illustrates a couple of maintenance issues. 1. Tiles Grind Away: You may grind through your tiles at the edge, especially if you are making a very fast (low focal ratio) mirror. In that case, you can epoxy a second layer of tiles on over the first.

After grinding, the lens was polished, sometimes using the same lap that had been used to shape it. That required preparing the lap surface to remove roughness. In some cases, it was done by overlaying the surface of the lap with a specially prepared paper. In other cases, a method still used by amateurs to polish telpe mirrors was used.
